ADM 2008: The environment
Delegates were keen to show off their green credentials during the environment debate.
John G Jones (St Merryn Merthyr) suggested the union runs its own campaign and training courses to raise the profile of environmental issues. "This affects all of us," he said. "Green is go, so let's go for green."
Tony Campbell (Plymouth Tesco) moved two propositions from his branch on fairtrade products and green policies. "The idea of trade justice for workers in third world countries ties in perfectly with trade union principles," he said. "There is still a lot more to be done but as a union we should promote and endorse a policy of using fair trade products."
Tony also called on the union to implement green policies in its work in order to reduce its carbon footprint. "The union should put green policies at the forefront of its agenda. It should encourage car-sharing, recycling and conserve energy. Young people are motivated by these issues because unless we 'waste not, want not' we jeopardise their future."
Other delegates who joined the debate were; David MacFarlane, Helen Laverick, Vishnu Patel, Rose Bevan and Richard Groves. The one dissenting voice was John Pomroy (South Herts Holding) who said: "Global warming and climate change are naturally occurring phenomenon. We couldn't have halted the ice-age, it happened. Naturally occurring emissions from volcanoes account for a large percentage of the damage while humans account for between two and three per cent. Even if we reduce our carbon footprint it would make no difference."
Deputy general secretary Paddy Lillis described the environmental issue as 'one of the greatest challenges facing this planet'.
"Sea levels are rising, deserts are growing and the UK has had more flood damage in the last decade than it has had in the last 30 years.
By working in partnership, unions and employers can improve energy efficiency, reduce waste, and promote sustainable policies at work.
"As a union we are greener and we are committed to continue with this process while ensuring we get the best value for members' money."
