ADM 2008: Activists take centre stage at conference
The union’s ambitious investment plans for its groundbreaking Academy and its commitment to delivering an improving service to its members received a massive boost when delegates voted overwhelmingly to increase subscription rates.
General secretary John Hannett gave a detailed explanation of the union's initiatives for 2008/9. "We are a financially strong organisation, but it's important we maintain that strength and stability by looking to the challenges ahead," he said. "We will re-invest at a time of growing membership, under our modernising programme, in our training and facilities for reps and staff, and in our organising agenda which has seen this union grow faster than any other in the UK.
"Our campaigns will continue to make real improvements to our members' lives and allow us to press employers and lobby the government, in a responsible way, to ensure fairness and respect in the workplace and beyond.
"Our Strategic Plan will take our award-winning campaigns like Supporting Parents and Carers and Freedom From Fear to the heart of the political and industrial agenda and new initiatives on young workers, and migrant and agency staff are just some of the plans we have for the next year.
"Our new FirstCall Usdaw, part of the legal plus service, is also a massive step forward. My aim is to make this union the most effective and efficient as possible."
Subscription rates will rise from £1.98 to £2.06 for Scale A, from £1.74 to £1.82 for Scale B, and from £1.26 to £1.30 for Scale C. These became effective from June 30.
John Hannett and deputy general secretary Paddy Lillis replied to all of the debates while president Jeff Broome chaired the conference and executive councillor Jeff Beresford chaired the standing orders committee.
