Conference call for women members

The TUC Women’s Conference in Eastbourne gave Usdaw’s delegates and women from across the trade union movement the chance to discuss what issues the TUC should be campaigning on in the year ahead.

The conference discussed a huge range of issues - including equal pay, abortion rights, women's health and safety and the need for better childcare. Usdaw's team raised concerns at the high numbers of women being disciplined for sickness absence. Research shows that women can be more likely to be penalised under absence management schemes because they tend to have more frequent, shorter periods of sickness absence than men.

The conference celebrated International Women's Day and heard from a speaker from the Iraqi Women's League about the impact the violence there is having on women's lives.

Hayley Pickles , who has been newly elected to sit on the TUC Women's Committee on behalf of Usdaw, said: "I would encourage any woman member who hasn't been to this conference to put her name forward. It is fantastic - friendly, enjoyable and fun."

If you are interested in attending next year's TUC Women's Conference, let your local Usdaw office know.
