Talking to safety rep Jan Main

Jan Main works for Morrisons in Stewartfield, East Kilbride, Scotland.

"Most workers don't give too much thought to health and safety until they have a problem.

"I know I didn't until I slipped at work. It brought home just how important health and safety is and I wasted no time putting my name forward as the store rep.

"It's very interesting and there's a lot to learn. You get paid time off for training and to carry out your role. Regular risk assessments, investigating accidents and potential hazards are a vital part of the role. It's a common sense approach really.

"Staff need to be vigilant, keep their own areas safe and to report any potential hazards immediately.

"We had a problem recently where checkout operators were being cut by display tickets because they had to reach over to them. I looked into it, made a report and spoke to my manager. The displays were moved to another area - problem solved."
