Health and safety news in briefThe news in brief. Memorial dayAs usual International Workers' Memorial Day is on 28 April. This year's theme is 'Good Occupational Health for all Workers'To mark the day, wear and distribute purple 'forget-me-not ribbons' the symbol of Workers Memorial Day (available from Greater Manchester Hazards Centre) www.gmhazards.org.uk/wmdribbonof.doc As it falls on the Monday of the Annual Delegate Meeting, purple ribbons will be available at conference along with copies of the Usdaw leaflet. Risky businessThe HSE has added more examples to its growing list of model risk assessments. The new workplaces covered include a call centre, a road haulage company, and a small café.The examples walk you through the hazards to look out for in these workplaces. To see them go to the HSE website: www.hse.gov.uk/risk/casestudies
Toying aroundThis month's HSE myth looks at toy weapons in stage productions following reports that toy guns in a play had to be registered with the police and locked up. Reports said that the theatre company were just following the relevant HSE guidance sheet. The guidance sheet is clear; it deals with real weapons and replicas that can cause serious injury or be used in robberies, not plastic toys! Fines too lowTwo recent reports show that employers who break health and safety laws are still treated too leniently by the courts.A review of sentences over the last two years in the Health and Safety Bulletin states: 'Nine years after the Court of Appeal concluded that fines for health and safety offences were too low, little has changed from the abject situation that we reported two years ago.'
Professional.co.ukAnd research by the Centre for Corporate Accountability (CCA) shows that most large companies convicted of safety offences involving a death are fined at less than a 700th of their annual turnover. If individuals earning an average annual income of £24,769 were sentenced at this level, they would be fined just £35. www.corporateaccountability.org
Road safety weekCompanies and reps are being urged to get involved in Road Safety Week, organised by the charity Brake, during 10-16 November this year. The theme this year is Family Safety-Protect the Ones You Love and sees this national event into its 11th year. Brake exists to stop the nine deaths and 89 serious injuries that happen on UK roads every day.
