Equalities news in brief
The news in brief.
April increase
The flat rate of Statutory Maternity, Paternity and Adoption Pay went up from £112.75 to £117.18 per week in April 2008. The Lower Earnings Limit also increased from £87 to £90 per week.
Workstep boost
The Government has announced that more money will be available to help disabled workers into employment.
The extra money is to boost the existing WORKSTEP initiative, a programme that helps disabled people find and remain in paid work.
Mum's pay divide
The difference between men's and women's pay more than trebles when women reach their 30s because of a 'motherhood' penalty, says a new TUC report.
Despite the fact that most women with children are now in paid work, they still shoulder the main responsibility for childcare. A lack of flexible working and problems finding affordable childcare particularly outside of school hours leaves women with fewer opportunities for promotion and clustered in low paid, low status jobs. www.tuc.org.uk
Prejudice rife
Britain's 3.6 million lesbian, gay and bisexual people see themselves confronted by huge barriers of prejudice at every level of society, according to a new survey by equality charity Stonewall.
Homophobic bullying in schools was identified as the most entrenched bastion of prejudice.
