International Women’s Day March 8
Every year on March 8th thousands of International Women’s Day events occur all around the world. It’s an important day in the trade union calendar as it helps to focus attention on how far we have come in the struggle to achieve equality for women. From winning the right to vote in 1928 (for all women) to the implementation of the Sex Discrimination Act in 1975 there is no doubt some decisive victories have been won for women by women over the last century.
However there is still a long way to go. Despite 30 years of equal pay legislation women still do not receive the same pay as men for doing the same jobs - at the current rate of progress women working full-time won't achieve the same pay as men until 2085. We also know that despite laws protecting pregnant women at work from discrimination it still happens on a large scale.
Research has shown that over 30,000 women a year feel pushed out of their jobs because of their pregnancy. Usdaw continues to campaign for women's equality, taking up issues that matter to women like better maternity rights or ending violence against women.
