Health and safety news in briefThe news in brief. Repetition riskMusculoskeletal disorders are the leading cause of work-related ill health in this country. A significant proportion of these injuries are caused by the wear and tear of repetitive work. The combination of prolonged repeated physical effort, lack of rest breaks and the psychological pressure to keep on working at all costs can cause serious injury.Hazards magazine offers some useful guidance and helpful resources for safety reps to identify the risky jobs in their workplace.
Don't slip upMore than 1,000 workers a month suffer a serious injury following a slip, trip or fall. The HSE's latest campaign is aimed primarily at those most at risk of a slip, trip or fall at work including workers in retail and food manufacturing. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of the risks and help those involved to take simple action that will prevent accidents. To find out more go to www.hse.gov.uk/shatteredlives and sign up for the email alerts about the campaign.
Gender safetyThe TUC has issued a new checklist for reps to use in the workplace covering the issue of gender equality in health and safety. It raises a number of questions on safety policies and procedures to test how gender-sensitive health and safety management is in your workplace. More at: www.tuc.org.uk/h_and_sTUC speaks upLevels of inspection and formal enforcement are too low, the TUC has told The Work and Pensions Select Committee which has carried out a review of the work of the HSE. The TUC response made it clear that while unions support the HSC and HSE, the work that they are able to do is seriously limited by lack of funding and resource cuts.More effective penalties and more enforcement action is needed on the key work-related health issues, say the TUC.
Hazards meetingThe 19th Hazards Conference will be held this year at Keele University, Staffordshire from 18th-20th July. The Hazards Conference is the largest event for trade union safety reps in the UK. Every year up to 600 safety reps from different unions attend the conference which is a mixture of workshops, discussions and lectures. It runs from Friday evening to Sunday lunchtime.
