Network Journal 2008 Issue 1 Jan/Feb

Speaking up on flexible working

Many of our members who are either parents of young or disabled children or carers have made use of the right to request flexible working since its introduction in 2003.

Usdaw therefore welcomes the recent Government announcement that the right is going to be extended to parents of older children. An independent review has been set up to consider how far to raise the age limit of the child.

At the moment only parents of children aged under six (or 18 if disabled) or carers of disabled adults can access the right to request flexible working.

Usdaw has long argued that the right should be extended to all parents. The demands on parents change as their children grow up - they do not disappear.

If we are going to persuade Government of the need to raise the age limit to 18 then we are going to need evidence from our reps and members.

If you are a parent of a child aged 6-18 and you would like to work more flexibly, please contact the equalities section on 0161 224 2804 and ask for Ruth Cross or Jo Bird.
