Equalities news in brief

The news in brief.

Spotlight Day

This year's Parents and Carers Spotlight Day will be on Wednesday 11 June 2008. The theme will be carers rights. Watch this space for more details about what we will be campaigning for on the day and how you can get active.

Conference call

If you are disabled you might be interested in going to TUC Disability Conference in London on 21 and 22 May. The conference is for disabled workers from all unions and discusses issues important to them. If you want to be nominated to be part of Usdaw's delegation, contact your local office.

Delegates wanted

If you are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) you might be interested in going to TUC LGBT Conference in London on 3 and 4 July. The conference is for LGBT workers from all unions and discusses issues important to them. If you want to be nominated to be part of Usdaw's delegation, contact your local office.

Women's work

New research by Cambridge University has found that women are still responsible for most household chores and childcare and their overall working day is much longer than men's as a result. This means that women have fewer opportunities than men to increase their earnings, take advantage of training or make progress at work.

Carers lose out

Carers who have to cut back their hours to juggle work and home life can lose up to £11,000 in earnings. Carers often have to take low paid work as this is the only work that will fit in with their home responsibilities.

Ageism rife

The TUC is calling on the government to end the massive problem of ageism at work. The TUC wants older workers to be able to ease into retirement by combining work with a part time pension.

AIDS aware

The TUC and the National AIDS Trust have published a workplace leaflet about how to tackle the discrimination and stigma that still surrounds HIV. Despite being covered by the DDA at the point of diagnosis, many people living with HIV face unfair treatment at work. The leaflet is available at: www.tuc.org.uk

Tax benefit

From April 2008, child benefit and the basic state benefit are raised in line with inflation; but the child element of child tax credit increases in line with average earnings. Visit: www.hm-treasury.gov.uk

Case law on care

The European Union legal opinion on rights for carers at work has been delayed. The case concerns a single parent who feels that she was discriminated against at work because of her role as her son's primary carer. If successful the case will extend protection from discrimination to carers of disabled children and parents.
