Agency Workers

Labour MP Andrew Miller is working with Usdaw and other trade unions to pass a Bill in the UK Parliament to protect agency workers, writes political officer Ruth George.

This will help in the absence of the European Directive on agency workers which was not passed.

The Bill will give equal treatment to agency staff when compared to permanent employees doing the same job.

Usdaw members on some sites are affected because agency workers are brought in on a lower rate to work shifts that attract premiums, so the permanent staff are losing the opportunity to top up their wages. By giving equal treatment to agency staff, employers will not be able to save money by undermining core staff's terms and conditions.

The Bill will be voted on in Parliament on Friday 22 February. MPs are usually working in their constituencies on Fridays but we need at least 100 supportive MPs to stop the Bill being defeated by the Tories.

Please write to your MP to ask them to support Andrew Miller's Bill and to be in Parliament on 22 February. Find out your MP and write to them at www.writetothem.com or address your letter to them at House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA.
