Transport Conference 2007: Committee member
Being a member of the National Road Transport Committee gives Cliff Quilter the chance to see the bigger picture and go beyond company-specific issues.
The Tesco HGV driver is the Eastern division's rep and has served on the committee for six years. "I've worked for Tesco for 31 years and been a rep for 11," said the 47 year-old. "I'm very interested in the sector. I've been very active locally and regionally over the years so I saw stepping up to the national level as the next logical move.
"There's plenty to discuss and we submit consultation papers to the Government on various subjects.
I think it's important that our committee can give the view from the driver's seat to the people who are making the decisions at the highest level.
"I don't think the general public appreciate how much expertise and responsibility today's professional drivers have.
"The national conference provides drivers with a great forum."
Drivers' Handbook
The newly updated Drivers' Handbook was given a special mention by conference chair Tony Threlfall.
"This is one of the best Usdaw publications crammed with vital information for members who drive for a living," he said.
"It's also free of charge and I would urge all driver members to send off for their copy."
