National Political Conference 2007: Proud of union Labour link

Only Labour has an agenda that addresses the hopes and aspirations of working people, said Ed Miliband MP, minister for the cabinet office, speaking for the first time at the conference.

"I'm proud to be an Usdaw MP and a member of one of the most forward looking unions in the country," he said.

The MP for Doncaster North said he welcomed the opportunity to hear what fellow Usdaw members thought the Labour Government's priorities should be.

"Our next manifesto has to be a document written by the whole Labour Movement and the input of Usdaw members will be very important.

"We have every reason to be optimistic, but we cannot simply campaign on our past achievements.

Outlining where he thought that vision lay, he told delegates that the next manifesto would not only address people's standard of living and aspirations but also issues such as the quality of their work and the balance between this and family life.

"It is important we show the big difference there is between us and the Tories," he continued. "They want to pretend they are something they are not and we shouldn't believe a word of it.

"The Tories won't invest in our public services and they won't help working people. They simply want to run a con trick."

Join the party and get involved

Signing up new members for the Labour Party is not dissimilar to recruiting people to Usdaw, general secretary John Hannett told the Conference.

"The key is people don't join unless they are asked!" he said. John was speaking to delegates as they began planning their political work for 2008 and he urged them to make sure they spent time recruiting members to Labour in order to help Usdaw's campaigns.

"By building a bigger Party membership among Usdaw members we can significantly increase our ability to influence key opinion formers. There is no doubt that MPs, MSPs and AMs listen closely to what their local Party members are saying and they respond directly to issues and campaigns raised by local Party members.

"I know that where we have delegates to local Labour Parties our message is getting through. I regularly have conversations with MPs who tell me that the issues we are campaigning on nationally have already been raised by an Usdaw delegate in their own constituency." said John.

Usdaw makes it easy to join the Labour Party. Every member who pays the political levy can join free for the first year and it is just £12 per year thereafter.
