Equalities news in brief
The equalities news in brief.
Mature debate
Ageism remains deeply entrenched in business culture, says TUC leader Brendan Barber who has called for a complete policy shake up.
He highlighted four areas in need of change; investment in training for older workers, the option of flexible retirement arrangements, the right to request flexible working, and redeployment opportunities.
Leaflets
Recruitment leaflets in 39 different languages are available from central office for reps who have migrant workers at their site. Call 0161 224 2804.
Polish website
The TUC has launched a new Polish website to support the increasing number of Polish workers in the UK.
The website www.pracawbrytanii.org is run by the TUC in partnership with Citizens Advice and Solidarnosc. It explains workers' rights, working time, minimum wage, holiday entitlement, sick pay and includes information on housing and health.
Agency workers
The TUC is calling on the Government to break a longstanding European deadlock and agree a new deal for agency workers.
The majority of EU states are backing the proposals which if adopted will give temps in the UK the same right to pay, working time and holidays, and maternity rights as permanent staff.
Legal rights
The TUC has produced a leaflet giving information about migrant workers' legal rights. It is available to download in: Czech, English, Estonian, French, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Russian, Slovak and Spanish.
