Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA)

The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) is a government-funded scheme set up to compensate anyone who has been injured because of a violent crime.

Usdaw members will be given legal assistance to make a claim. Remember you have to follow strict rules and to qualify you MUST have:

  • Been a victim of a crime of violence, and either physically or psychologically injured as a result.
  • Reported the incident personally to the police as soon as possible after it happened.
  • Been injured seriously enough to qualify for at least the minimum award.
  • Sent off your application within two years from the date of the incident.

If you have been a victim of crime, or for more information, speak to your union rep or your local Usdaw office or call the national helpline on 0845 6060640.

"It's important that any of our members who are victims of violent crime either directly or indirectly make a claim under the CICA scheme," said general secretary John Hannett. "Being attacked or witnessing an assault can have long term consequences for workers both physically and psychologically. It's only fair that they are compensated for this injury and trauma.

"It doesn't end with the individual either. Families are affected too and it is these unseen consequences which are often forgotten about. We know that for many victims they never return to their original job or work in the sector again."
