Equalities news in brief

The latest equalities news.

Million petition

The European Disability Forum has launched a petition to press for an EU Directive on disability rights.

Visit: www.1million4disability.eu and add your name.

Carers survey

It's not too late to take part in Usdaw's survey of what life is like for carers. The survey will be used to press government and employers to do more to support working carers. You can fill out the survey online at: www.usdaw.org.uk/campaigns/supportingparentsandcarers

Carers report

A new, free report by Carers UK highlights the poverty faced by thousands of working carers and sets out why we need to do more to help carers stay in work. The report will be of interest to carers and to reps and can be downloaded from www.carersuk.org

Maternity leave

From April 2009 Usdaw is to extend the paid period of maternity leave from nine months to 12 months and let parents decide between them who takes up the last six months of leave.

The Government is currently consulting unions and other interested parties about how this might work in practice. The feeling is that take up amongst fathers will be very low, at least to begin with. Let us know what you think via e-mail: equalitymatters@usdaw.org.uk

Disability guide

The TUC has produced an excellent trade union guide to the law and good practice called Disability At Work.

It includes up to date case studies in some of the major areas of working life where experience has shown that disabled people face the worst problems.

You can order a copy for free by telephoning 020 7467 1294 or download a copy by visiting: www.tuc.org.uk
