Kwik Save’s demise devastates members
Usdaw will help devastated members pick up the pieces after Kwik Save finally went into administration following weeks of uncertainty, unpaid wages and empty shelves.
The end came in July at the High Court in Manchester when the company said it would close 90 stores and transfer the remaining 56 to a new company Freshxpress. In total more than 1,500 people have been made redundant.
"Our job now is to make sure our members get the redundancy money and back pay they are owed," said general secretary John Hannett.
"This has been an unprecedented situation with staff asked to work unpaid for weeks while the company tried to sort out a rescue package. In the end only 500 jobs will transfer to the new company leaving three out of four staff looking for another job.
"We will be making sure our members get their legal right to statutory redundancy and back pay paid by the Government's department of trade and industry under these circumstances.
"Our members have had to endure incredible hardship during these last few weeks and have done their utmost to keep the company going.
"They have deserved much better treatment than they received but at least they have the reassurance that Usdaw will be at their side over the coming weeks."
