ADM 2007: Safety first
Working temperatures, scanning rates, drinking water, and fire escapes all featured heavily in the health and safety debate.
Merle Morris (Chelmsford & Colchester Retail) urged the union to lobby more for reasonable temperatures at work. "When it gets too hot that's when accidents happen because staff feel ill," she said. "Dress codes should be relaxed when it's hot and extra breaks should be given when it's too cold."
Pressure on checkout staff to scan goods quickly, with little time to chat to customers is making the shopping experience an unpleasant one, said Jenny Lee (Barnstaple & District). "Having to scan and pack causes stress, gives you little time for the shoppers and is unhealthy for both staff and customers," she said.
Tony Campbell (Plymouth Tesco) called for the provision of drinking water at all work stations. "These should be spill-proof and if introduced will avoid staff becoming dehydrated."
Helping staff escape a fire should be at the forefront, said Steven Charlwood (Irvine), who called for low-level directional indicators to help workers escape the premises as quickly as possible. "You can rebuild factories but you can't replace lives."
Speakers included; John Borbely, David Chadwick, Daniel Gee, Anne Meacock, Angelina Cantwell and many others.
