Kwik Save closes 79 stores then reopens 20
Struggling discounter Kwik Save made a dramatic U-turn in June when it said it was reopening 20 of the 79 stores it had closed overnight in late May.
Around 700 staff were facing redundancy but this latest development could see approximately 200 jobs saved.
The company have said that these 20 stores are economically viable and has written to members who worked in those stores offering them their jobs back with no break of service.
"Usdaw has written to Kwik Save to press the company about long-term job security for our members who decide to take up the offer," said national officer Joanne McGuinness. "We also want to know how Kwik Save intend to resolve supply chain problems to ensure there is enough stock on the shelves so the reopened stores can trade competitively.
"Kwik Save staff is seeking volunteers to go back to their old jobs and if any of our members decide to take up the offer we will fully support them, but if former Kwik Save staff decide not to return they will still be entitled to their full redundancy payments which are due in late June."
Members were left shocked and devastated after the shutters came down with just 24 hours notice given to staff by the under-pressure chain.
"Usdaw will be supporting all of our members who have been made redundant and making sure they get their full redundancy payments," added Joanne.
"We believe long serving and loyal staff deserved better than this and at least a longer consultation period before the stores were closed. The speed of the closures shocked everyone."
