Shock over job cuts at Kerry Foods
Usdaw has pledged to support members at the Kerry Foods plant in Durham after the company announced up to 170 redundancies.
Union members have been told that there could be significant job losses in Durham which manufactures ready-meals for the retail food sector.
The company has blamed under-production at the site.
"Our members at the Kerry's site are naturally shocked at this announcement," said divisional officer Mike Brewer. "The changes are scheduled to be completed by November 2007 and we are already engaged in a rigorous consultation process with the company.
"We want to examine the business case behind this shock announcement and work with the company to explore the possibility of sourcing new products to boost production at the site.
"Usdaw members at Kerrys are a hugely talented and experienced team and they can be assured we will do everything we can to mitigate the scale of the redundancies."
The company have said they will set up on-site 'job shops' to help employees find alternative work in the area. Negotiations will continue throughout the summer.
