Blears backs Usdaw on flexibility
Labour deputy leadership candidate Hazel Blears has come out in support of Usdaw’s campaign to extend the right to request flexible working to all workers.
The MP for Salford and Labour Party chair joined general secretary John Hannett and members at the Tesco store in Kensington to take part in a store forum.
"This visit gave me the chance to hear first hand how working people juggle their work commitments with their home lives and responsibilities," said Hazel. "I'm particularly keen that the Government, which introduced the right to request flexible working for parents with young children, looks at how we can extend that right to parents with older children."
John Hannett welcomed Hazel's support. "Usdaw is delighted that Hazel backs our common-sense approach to this important issue," said John. "She listened closely to what our members had to say about the real difficulties of balancing their work and home commitments. Her support is very important as we look to push forward our Supporting Parents and Carers campaign.
"Hazel knows how tough the retail sector is and understands not only the employees' case but the positive impact it would have on business in terms of staff retention and morale. Our members know it's all about getting the work/life balance right."
