ADM fringe meeting: Building solidarity with migrant workers
More than 120 delegates and visitors packed the meeting room at ADM to hear speakers talk about their experiences of organising and recruiting migrant workers.
The meeting was organised by the union's national equalities group and chaired by activist Maureen Williams.
John Hannett said that Usdaw was determined to recruit and support migrant workers employed in Usdaw sectors. "Migrant workers need the protection of our union as they are some of the most vulnerable workers in the UK," he said. "Usdaw also needs them to join otherwise we face having our members' terms and conditions being undercut by employers who use migrant workers as cheap labour."
Joao Magioly, a Portuguese worker who came to the UK four years ago is an active rep. "Joao has done a huge amount of work at First Milk to recruit agency workers and arrange ESOL training for them," said acting equalities officer Jo Bird.
Other speakers included; Jan Wszolek who works for Tesco, Esther Stewart a new rep at Grampian Country Pork in Broxburn, and Adam Skwierawski a new organiser originally from Poland. "The meeting was an inspiration and showed the hard work that many reps are already doing to recruit and organise migrant workers," added Jo Bird.
