Reps turnout in force for Spotlight Day

The first of the two Supporting Parents and Carers Spotlight Days was a huge success with more than 95 events being staged across the UK by reps and officials.

As Network went to press the second Spotlight Day on June 13 will focus on working carers to coincide with National Carers Week.

"The Spotlight days help us to focus on the issues that really matter to working parents and carers. They give us the opportunity to raise these issues with members and non-members and press for improvements with employers and government," said general secretary John Hannett.

"Our London event was supported by more than 40 MPs proving once again that Usdaw can attract backing for its well-thought out and focused campaigns."

Hundreds of survey forms and petitions were collected during the two days. Reps also made the most of Usdaw's comprehensive publicity material and merchandise.

"This campaign will run and run," added John. "We want to see the Government remove the rule that prevents working carers from claiming Carers Allowance if they earn more than £87 a week.

"We also want the Government to allow working parents whose children are aged over six the right to request flexible working. At present only parents whose children are aged under six (or 18 for parents of disabled children) can request flexible working.

"However, thanks in part to Usdaw's campaign, carers of adults now also have the right to ask for changes to their working hours."
