Tesco and Usdaw put respect first

Usdaw and Tesco have joined forces to combat abusive shoppers by placing posters in every store warning that staff have the right to work in a safe environment.

Tesco chief executive Sir Terry Leahy has agreed that the posters will be prominently displayed to remind the small minority of customers that abusive behaviour will not be tolerated. This initiative forms part of Usdaw's Freedom From Fear campaign.

General secretary John Hannett joined Sir Terry Leahy at a Tesco Extra store in Greater Manchester to launch the national campaign.

"We're delighted that Tesco has worked with us to develop these posters," said John. "The fact that Tesco and Usdaw have come together to launch this initiative shows the battle to stamp out abuse is being taken seriously from the top down.

"There's no doubt these highly visible posters will help remind shoppers that stores should be safe places to shop and work. I believe they will play a big role in creating safer working environments for Tesco's staff."

Respect Supporter

Labour MP David Hanson (Delyn) lost no time in adding his support to the new Usdaw/Tesco poster.

He joined divisional reps at the Tesco store in Flint, North Wales. "I very much support the work Usdaw and Tesco are doing to promote respect in their stores," he said. "It's very important shoppers understand shopworkers are real people who should be treated with respect."

Recruitment and development rep Sandra Hewitt said it raised the union's profile in the store. "We recruited more members and a rep on the day. It was a worthwhile exercise."
