Network Journal 2007 Issue 2 March/April

Don’t just sit there!

Workers spending excessive time at their desk could be putting their lives at risk, according to a study.

Medical Research Institute, New Zealand, found a third of patients admitted to hospital with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) - blood clots in a deep vein, - were office workers who spent hours at a computer.

Symptoms include pain, swelling, redness and dilated surface veins seen on the skin.

Worst affected were managers, IT workers and taxi drivers. Some office workers who developed clots sat at their screens for 14 hours a day, some going 3-4 hours at a time without getting up.'
