Network Journal 2007 Issue 2 March/April

Meaty advice

Guidance notes on health and safety in the meat industry are now available on the web site of the British Meat Processors Association (BMPA).

The guidance covers a range of commonly used machinery and equipment such as bowl choppers, bandsaws, hand knives and mechanical deboning systems. It also gives advice on risk assessment in the industry and on priority health and safety topics such as workplace transport, control of hazardous substances and thermal comfort. It can be found at: www.bmpa.uk.com

The BMPA have also developed a booklet for employees whose jobs involve handling animals, particularly during the slaughter process. The booklet highlights diseases which may present a hazard to abattoir staff. Members should urge their employers to purchase a supply of the books.
