Network Journal 2007 Issue 2 March/April

National award for learning rep

Margaret Coyle, Usdaw development worker, Boots.

Congratulations to Fatema Lightwala who I met when she enrolled on her first course at the Phoenix centre at Boots, Beeston, in Nottingham in 2004. She had just become a member and wanted to get more involved.

When the position of learner rep became vacant on her section Fatema jumped at the chance to be nominated. She showed lots of interest in developing her own skills but also actively encouraged others.

Fatema has encouraged more members to enrol onto English and Maths. As English is not Fatema's first language she knows first hand the barriers that other members face with communication, in and out of work, and has been a great role model for Usdaw members in a similar situation.

Fatema has used lifelong learning to recruit new members into the union, she also explains the full range of benefits available to members as part of her work at the Phoenix centre.
