Justice for Colombia
Usdaw’s commitment to international solidarity for trade unionists around the world was on display in London last month when deputy general secretary Paddy Lillis headed the union’s delegation on a demonstration outside the Colombian Embassy.
The South American country is one of the most dangerous countries for trade unionists with more than 80 activists murdered in 2006.
"Since 2002 more than 500 trade unionists have been killed since President Uribe came to power," said Paddy. "The Colombian Army continues to work with paramilitary death squads with total impunity and murders, torture and disappearances are still sadly an everyday occurrence."
Justice for Colombia (JFC) is a coalition of organisations and individuals concerned by the horrific human rights crisis faced by trade unionists in Colombia.
JFC works to raise awareness of the situation in Colombia and to provide much needed solidarity to organisations working on the ground there.
It was set up by the TUC and a group of British trade unions in 2002. Usdaw is affiliated to JFC at a national level - between them they represent over 11 million people.
