Life as a busy safety rep

Midlands division’s Angela Tune has been enjoying her health and safety role for the last five years at the Tesco store in Worcester.

The 39 year-old mother-of-two combines her work as a general assistant with her safety and trade union roles and manages to fit them around her two sons aged 14 and 6.

"I'm a great believer in the importance of health and safety," said Angela, who was the division's nomination for the national organising awards held earlier this year. "And I wanted to do my bit.

"When we have a problem I deal directly with the store or duty manager and we tend to get things sorted out pretty quickly.

"I'm on our store forum which deals with safety along with all the other workplace issues. I'm also on the store director forum, the next level up, so I'm a busy woman. I'm lucky I have a very supportive family.

"I've been on quite a few union courses which I've found very useful. It's always interesting to meet other reps as well because they have a lot of knowledge and can help you sort out any problems or give you ideas on how to deal with them. Our local federation also organises courses and these are a good source of information.

"I've got my eye on future training courses because you never stop learning do you.

"Health and safety is a job which is never finished. There are always new starters who need to be trained and you have to keep reminding people about some safety issues. But we have a good bunch of people at our store and we work things out at local level.

"I'm going to ADM for the first time this year as a delegate for South Midlands General branch E61. I'm looking forward to it although I'm a bit nervous."
