Migrants exploited

Name & address supplied.

I work in the distribution network for a major retail company and I want to bring your readers attention to a worrying trend in the sector.

It seems to me that many of the long-serving staff are being offered redundancy deals, which are attractive, and then these staff are being replaced by agency staff - mainly from EU member states.

The problem is that these agency or migrant workers are taken under much inferior terms and conditions than the departed and remaining staff. To me this is nothing short of exploitation.

These workers have to pay air fares, receive far less pay, their overtime rates are very low and they can be sent home half-way through a shift.

We cannot stand by and allow this non-unionised labour to undermine our existing terms and conditions. It weakens union membership and our collective strength.
