Massive turnout from North West Tesco RepsInformative, enjoyable and successful, that was the verdict from Reps in K division who went to the first weekend get-together for Tesco Activists, held in Blackpool in January. The two day event, probably the biggest of its kind in the UK, attracted 100 Reps who are aiming to build on the divisional progress made in the last few months of last year. "We have doubled the numbers of recruits we sign up at inductions," said Divisional Officer Mike Aylward. "We currently recruit on average eight out of ten new starters that's up from around 40 per cent uptake before August." The two-day event focussed on recruitment and organising and linked in with the union's national campaign to increase membership. "It was an informative and enjoyable weekend," said Elaine Curran, Tesco Rochdale. "Being totally Tesco made it really relevant to our stores and helped us focus our attention quickly and get the best out of the weekend," said Omotayo Ogunmoro, Tesco Firswood, Manchester. "We looked at current membership levels within the division and in our own stores and how we could raise the union's profile," said Gill McPartland, Tesco Allerton, Liverpool. "Yes, we want to sign up more new members," added Mike Aylward, "but part of that is recruiting new Reps and giving them the support and training they need to do a good job. It's a team effort. "It was a fantastic turnout with half the stores in the division represented. This shows a great commitment from our Reps who, to their credit, used their own time to attend. "This was the first event of its kind and from the feedback I've received, it was a huge success." |
