National road transport conference
This is an ideal opportunity to meet workers from other companies and discuss issues that are unique to us, said Dennis Noble an LGV driver for Capper & Co in Wales.
"I deliver to small stores so it's very useful to meet drivers who work for big companies like Tesco and Unichem. You soon realise we share the same issues and concerns. The workshop sessions were interesting and informative. Moving Goods Safely was a good subject, the contributions were excellent and there were some very good points made. We worked in small groups so people were more inclined to speak up and this helped to highlight a lot of the problems associated with handling goods. My only complaint is that a day isn't long enough."
New working time legislation has been behind most of the changes in the sector, said Cliff Quilter who works for Tesco distribution at Fennylock in Milton Keynes.
"This is my sixth year at the conference and the last two years especially have proved very useful and relevant because we've been able to discuss the specifics of the legislation at length. This has helped throw up potential problems and ways of dealing with them. I represent 180 drivers at my site and I always come away with lots of valuable information to take back to them. "
National officer Irene Radigan thought the day was a huge success. "The enthusiasm of the delegates was outstanding," she said. "I was pleased to see so many reps from all the major transport companies make such excellent contributions."
