Racism video: still relevant
Usdaw’s powerful and moving video of the experiences of its black and Asian members is as relevant now as it was three years ago when it was first produced.
That was the overwhelming verdict of activists who viewed the 20 minute compilation of real-life incidents entitled - Racism Is No Joke.
"We could all identify with the people on the video," said Charlton Charles. "When you see and hear these things it does help to get the message across that racism has no place in modern society.
"I think this could be used in inductions to emphasise to members that they are not alone when it comes to tackling racism."
Tahir Mahmood suggested that the video could be adapted to include migrant workers. David Dunkley agreed: "Many of the migrant workers are white but feel black.
"I think this video should be made available to all workplaces and let's show it to both members and management."
After a lengthy discussion delegates agreed that the video should be shown at work, on training courses, at the Annual Delegate Meeting, at divisional conferences, and link it in with Usdaw's Freedom From Fear Campaign.
You can order copies of the video from the equalities department at central office on 0161 224 2804 or e-mail: equalitymatters@usdaw.org.uk
