Racism: an issue for allDespite 30 years of legislation racism is still widespread in today’s society, said General Secretary John Hannett. "We know that black and Asian people are more likely to be unemployed, or face pay discrimination or miss out on training or promotion," he said. "Usdaw's Working Against Racism survey highlighted the problem of racist 'jokes' and harassment and how damaging this is. "Racism is unjust, it divides us and it also damages our strength as a union, that's why it's an issue for us all. "We want dignity and respect for all our members regardless of their colour or religious belief. We will continue to challenge racism and promote equality. That's why we have a strong campaign record against the BNP. But words are easy, we have to take practical steps to eradicate racism."
Have your say: on the Usdaw surveyDelegates also discussed Usdaw's Working Against Racism survey and were encouraged to participate if they had not already done so. The survey has been running for a couple of months and is available on the union's web site and from the equalities section at central office. "The survey will run until the end of January and will give the union a better understanding of how widespread racial harassment and racist abuse is at work," said Jo Bird. "Early findings suggest that large numbers of black and Asian members experience abuse at work but very few feel able to speak to either the union or their manager about it. "We look forward to analysing the returns at the end of January and we will be publishing the findings towards the end of February." |
