Use campaign to recruit
“This is a fantastic opportunity for our reps to speak to non-members about an issue that is very important to all shopworkers,” said General Secretary John Hannett.
"We can ask people's views, but also offer them advice and support if they are under pressure to work on Sundays. The campaign is ideal to show all staff in retail that Usdaw is not only campaigning for them, but can help them too.
"Our primary aim is to win this campaign, but if it helps us to show both members and non-members that Usdaw are on their side, that's great."
The campaign is having a big impact in Parliament with 178 MPs already signed up to support the Early Day Motion opposing longer Sunday opening.
Several ministers have also indicated they are supporting Usdaw's position.
Usdaw's Group of MPs are actively promoting the campaign by encouraging other MPs to support us, and asking questions in the House.
The next stage of the campaign will involve sending as many postcards as possible to MPs from their own constituents, asking for their support. All activists will be sent postcards, stickers and order forms and will be encouraged to get as many as possible completed.
If you have any questions about the Sunday trading campaign, please contact Ruth Stoney or David Williams in the politics office on 0161 249 2452.
