Network Journal 2006 Issue 1 March

Usdaw’s Academy was just what I needed

Carole Hall, Northern Ireland Tesco No.2 K153.

I was one of 23 reps on the 2005 Academy and I have to say I have really enjoyed the opportunity to recruit in a variety of workplaces like Tesco, Argos and Morrisons.

I have had some excellent training over the years as a rep, but the Academy training is another notch up from this.

This has been a positive and encouraging time for me. Reps continue to use organising skills passed onto them from me.

I found the teams of shop stewards very keen when they understood more about the campaigns and why they were run. The interest is there and the teams are there.

I doubled membership in one store with the organising skills I learned from the Academy - before being asked to leave the store! Reps in the store will carry on where I left off.

After the training/education courses I feel I listen better, think before I speak and gather all information. I have learned to talk more slowly and listen to what people have to say. I have been taught to be open and honest to questions and never say what I cannot do but what I can.

I will return to my own store with more skills, a better understanding of how the union operates and the opportunity to contribute more to the union in the future.

I want to say thank you for this opportunity and to let people know when you make the effort you reap the rewards. It has been a very rewarding six months for me.

The best thing for me was seeing the union prosper in a new store which previously had no reps or members.

Many thanks to all the staff and officials at the Belfast and Warrington offices.
