Union mourns two well-respected activists

Mike Brewer, Divisional Officer.

It was with great sadness that members, activists and staff in the North Eastern division heard the news that Pauline Bailey died on January 3, following a short illness, she was 53.

Pauline was Branch Secretary of Yorkshire Morrisons, one of the largest and most successful branches in the division. She had also been a divisional councillor for the past five years.

Those who knew Pauline well are unanimous in their respect and admiration for the way in which she conducted herself on behalf of her members. From being a shop steward in Morrisons Horsforth store, where she worked for more than 23 years, Pauline progressed to Branch Secretary, divisional councillor, and was the division's rep on the Morrisons national negotiating committee. In all her roles within Usdaw, Pauline was recognised as a woman who conducted herself with dignity and resolve.

Pauline's life outside Usdaw centred on her husband Phil, three children, grandchildren and parents, our condolences go out to them.

Pauline's funeral was attended by many of her friends and colleagues from the Yorkshire Morrisons branch. We all paid our respects to a fine member and activist who will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

Brenda Roe, Newtown Kays MO K175.

It is with deep regret that I have to inform readers of Network, particularly in the North West and Wales, of the death of my friend and colleague Heddwyn Williams.

Heddwyn started out as a union rep with myself eight years ago and was Branch Secretary and a health and safety rep.

He was well liked by all who knew him, always put the members first, and loved being a part of the union.

He worked tirelessly to build up the branch and was at the forefront of campaigns like the Indian call centre issue speaking on Welsh TV and radio.

He will be greatly missed by all his friends and colleagues.
