Polish workers top the league of migrant workers from eastern and central Europe coming to the UK, new figures from the European Union (EU) reveal.
Between May 2004 and September 2005 more than 162,000 Poles came to work in Britain out of a total of 290,695 migrant workers. Other nationalities lined up as follows: Lithuanians 37,275, Slovakians 29,395, Latvians 18,480, Czechs 16,385 with Hungarians, Estonians and Slovenians making up the rest.
"These workers have boosted the UK economy, relieved skills shortages and cut dole queues," said an EU spokesman.
Payout
Supermarket giant Asda faces having to make a £850,000 payout to warehouse staff after a tribunal found the company tried to bribe 340 workers at its Washington, Tyne & Wear, depot to give up their union membership in exchange for a pay rise.
The company were paying non-union members more money at a near-by depot. Workers at the Washington site could be entitled to up to £2,500 each under legislation. Asda is considering an appeal against the tribunal decision.
