Absence costs the UK economy around £12 billion every year, the HSE has estimated.
The private sector accounts for approximately £8 billion of the total. The revelation coincides with a new strategy called Health Work and Well-Being launched by the HSE, The Department for Work and Pensions and The Department for Health. This aims to improve occupational health across the public and private sectors. Stress accounts for £3.7 billion of the total sick bill.
More evidence to suggest heart disease is linked to stress at work has been revealed by a research team from University College London.
The study also showed stress levels are worse for workers on the lower employment grades. The findings have been published online by the British Medical Journal (BMJ). http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/
The union has updated its guide to the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) to take account of changes to the law in 2005.
The new guide explains the eight basic principles to controlling exposure with step by step advice. http://www.usdaw.org.uk/healthandsafety/safety_net/02/update.html
- HSC - Health and Safety Commission appointed by the Government to advise on safety policy and recommend regulations.
- HSE - Health and Safety Executive appointed by the HSC to run the enforcement system.
