Campaign aims to cut transport death toll
Every year 70 people are killed and thousands are injured in accidents involving vehicles.
The most common involve people being hit, falling off or being struck by goods falling from vehicles.
As part of its priority campaign on the issue HSE has produced updated guidance on the safe use of vehicles in the workplace.
Workplace Transport: An employers' guide, (HSG136) costs £11.50 from HSE Books. The guide has been expanded to include more advice on site safety, the vehicles themselves and the people using them.
A new free leaflet, Workplace Transport Safety: An overview is also available. This 28 page guide covers advice on keeping vehicles and pedestrians separate, dealing with visiting drivers, making deliveries, safe site and safe vehicle advice and ways to manage risks associated with reversing, coupling and uncoupling, etc. Copies of the free overview leaflet can be downloaded here
The HSE web pages on workplace transport also give useful case studies and access to more information: www.hse.gov.uk/workplacetransport/index.htm
As part of the campaign on workplace transport the HSE has revised and updated its guidance on the use of this kind of equipment - Working Platforms (Non-integrated) on Forklift Trucks PM28.
The guide gives advice on when it is permissible to use temporary work platforms and information on the design of the platform and controls to minimise the risk: www.hse.gov.uk/workplacetransport/pm28.pdf
