Extend smoke free zones, says TUC
The TUC is calling on the Government to extend the proposed smoking ban in England to all indoor workplaces.
The present proposals would exempt private clubs and pubs where no food is served. The TUC argues that workers in those pubs and clubs need the same protection as workers in other workplaces. The department of health's consultation on their proposals finishes on September 5.
The TUC is urging all pub and club workers who might be affected by the proposed loophole to let health secretary Patricia Hewitt know what they think. It has set up a special web site to allow workers to send a standard letter or to add their comments at - www.tuc.org.uk/smokefreebars
The Scottish Parliament has already voted for a total ban in all indoor workplaces, including pubs, which will come into force in March 2006. Meanwhile, the Welsh Assembly has indicated it intends to follow the Scottish lead and introduce a comprehensive ban in the next three years.
