Health and Safety news in brief
Read more about the HSE advice available to members who work in laundries or in-store dry-cleaners, and a new TUC guide which aims to tackle the UK’s growing stress epidemic.
Members who work in laundries or in-store dry-cleaners can take advantage of the HSE web site which now offers advice for employers and employees.
According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) the main cause of injury in these industries are manual handling and machinery. There are also health hazards such as Repetitive Strain Injury, deafness from noisy machinery and exposure to hazardous chemicals. To find out more log on to: www.hse.gov.uk/laundries/
A new TUC guide tells safety reps how to make sure employers are doing all they can to tackle the UK's growing stress epidemic - which makes half a million people ill every year and costs society £3.7 billion.
The easy to use guide is based on the HSE's Stress Management Guidelines which say the best way for employers to minimise the impact of stress is to conduct workplace risk assessments. These allow the employer, with the help of union reps, to identify potential problem areas and act on them before stress-related illness begins to affect employees' health.
