European Week tunes into noise

This year’s European Safety Week, which runs from October 24-28, will focus on “Stop That Noise”. The European Agency estimates about a third of workers in Europe are exposed to potentially dangerous levels of noise.

New regulations to implement the latest European directive are due to come into force in the UK early next year. This is an important issue for Usdaw members in noisy industries such as food manufacturing, laundries and some warehouses.

The Agency points out that noise can also be a problem for some office and call centre workers. If background levels exceed 55 decibels it can be difficult to follow phone conversations and concentration is disturbed. For details of the EU campaign go to: http://europe.osha.eu.int

  • Working hours and hours of overtime every week will seriously damage your health, that is the stark warning from occupational researchers. Hypertension, cardiovascular disease, fatigue, stress, depression and other general ailments will take their toll on workers who regularly put in more than 45 hours a week, the study showed.
