Beware of kitchen calamities
The Health and Safety Executive has published a new free information sheet on “Preventing Slips and Trips in Kitchens and Food Service”, (Catering Information Sheet no. 6).
Slips and trips are the most common cause of serious injuries at work and kitchens are a high risk area. Most slips occur on wet or greasy floors and can be prevented. The information sheet gives advice on stopping floors from getting slippery, cleaning, improving grip and training. Injuries can often be very serious. In one example a 17 year-old slipped and put their hand into the deep-fat fryer resulting in severe burns.
On another occasion a woman slipped on a wet floor in a supermarket café kitchen and fractured her skull. Copies of the information sheet are on the HSE web site at: www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/cais6.pdf.
