Compensation award after fall

Harry Ramsden's chip shop worker John Campbell has received almost £50,000 in damages after falling from an unsecured ladder.

John fell 20ft at the Glasgow outlet after being ordered to hang a Christmas sign, weighing, what the judge described as, 'the same as a small woman.' He sustained a severe ankle injury and, four years after the accident, still can't work. The Glasgow sheriff said the firm failed to give proper training.

New Work at Height Regulations came into force in April this year. They state that ladders should only be used as a temporary measure for low-risk jobs and should be properly secured.
