ADM 2005 - sale of alcohol
Fines of £80 for shopworkers who sell alcohol to underage customers should be totally opposed, Edith Hebditch, Bournemouth and South Dorset told conference.
"Anyone can make a simple mistake," she said. "When you challenge an underage youngster they can get very aggressive and while some employers are supportive some are not. We are totally opposed to these arbitrary fines against some of the lowest paid workers in the country."
Delegates agreed including Lenny McCormick, Garry Gibson and Amy Douglas who said one of her members was caught out by trading standards for selling cigarettes to an underage girl. "Who looked 16," said Amy. "We need to wake up to this problem. Cashiers are regularly abused when they ask young customers for ID. Our Freedom From Fear campaign does work and we need to keep the campaign going."
