Giant Wal-Mart under fire
American retailer Wal-Mart was responsible for ‘extensive violations’ of child labour laws, and state regulations on food and rest breaks, according to its own audit.
The audit for approximately 25,000 employees found 1,371 instances where minors worked too late at night during school hours, or for too many hours in a day. It also found 60,767 instances of workers not taking breaks and 15,705 occasions of employees working through meal times.
Wal-Mart said that the audit, conducted in 2000, was misleading.
Meanwhile, Wal-Mart has come under fire for 'locking in' workers on night shifts at some of its stores across America. The New York Times reported a number of cases of employees being prevented from leaving their stores when they were injured or unwell.
A spokesperson for Wal-Mart said that a lock-in policy had operated in some stores for many years because of high crime and risk of 'shrinkage'.
