American shops dispute worsens
Tens of thousands of American trade unionists are embroiled in a bitter dispute with their employers over a revised health insurance and benefits package.
The 70,000 staff, employed in 852 stores, are members of the United Food and Commercial Workers union and have been on strike for more than four months.
Relations between the two sides have become increasingly acrimonious with the outcome of the strike seen as crucial to the future of the American trade union movement.
The dispute with supermarket chains Safeway, Kroger and Albertsons, in the south of the state may also spread to Dutch company Ahold, owners of the Stop & Shop chain.
