Summer schools beckon for new and active reps
Members who want to attend one of the union’s two summer schools are being urged to apply now.
Places are limited for the popular residential schools, which take place in September, so enquiries should be made sooner rather than later.
The union pays for all accommodation costs, and members awarded a place can claim travelling fares and allowances, as well as reasonable childcare costs.
The first school will be held at the TUC National Education Centre in London, from 11-18 September. The venue is self-contained and all rooms have en-suite facilities.
The school is designed for members who have already shown some commitment to the union and are keen to play a more active role in the future. The school also aims to help members to develop their knowledge and skills and their understanding of trade union aims, objectives and policies. The school will develop members' self-confidence and improve their organising and communication skills.
The second school is run over two separate weeks and is held at the union's national training centre in Warrington. The first week will be held from 5-11 September and the second week from 19-25 September. The school is usually aimed at people who have attended first school, or the branch officer's course, and who already play an active role at their workplace and their branch.
Members can choose to study one of the following specialist subjects. Trade Union Activity and the Law, Organising Women Workers, and The Union and Politics.
How to apply
Branches can nominate up to two members for each school. Branch nominations should then be sent to your Divisional Officer no later than Friday May 7, 2004. The Executive Council will then choose the successful candidates.
