Joanne Thomas - Usdaws youngest organiser

When former Makro product advisor Joanne Thomas was appointed to the union’s staff in 2001, aged 21, she was the youngest organiser on the books - she still is.

Now the 24 year-old can look back on three years at the sharp end - representing members in all industries, solving problems and defending workers at tribunals. She has no regrets.

"I'd definitely recommend it," she said. "The work is varied, rewarding, and very interesting. It's changed my life."

Joanne left school at 16 and soon became involved in the union. She made the most of the education and training courses, joined the youth committee, and saw her confidence soar.

"I'd never have imagined getting involved would have led to me becoming an Area Organiser. You need good communication skills, especially the willingness to listen. You have to be self-motivated and most important of all - you want to help others."
